Title: The Child
Summary: A short fic written for the [livejournal.com profile] airship_lounge Workshop Prompt: "balance." Raffaello from Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon thinks about what it means to be drawn to the Light while being one with the Dark.
Characters/Pairings: No pairings. Only character mentioned by name is Raffaello (I love his character design and story, so I really just wanted to write an introspective piece on him, lolz).
Word count: 231
Rating/warnings: Rated G.
Legal Disclaimer: I do not own the game or character featured in this fic. They belong to Square-Enix.

They called him a savior: a Child of Light. The boy stared down at his hands...hands that had glowed with a power he didn't quite understand, but that he could use all the same. He knew he was different, knew he wasn't normal. The one wing on his back a testament to that fact.

A Child of Light...yet, he understood the Darkness. He could feel it creeping in the shadows of his thoughts, always there in the back of his memories. The light that he used to protect, that people said made him a savior? Raffaello knew that it could also destroy, that it had destroyed in the past.

Yes, the child knew what he was...and he was no savior. He was no pure Child of Light. If anything, he served as the balance: the proof that to have Light, one must have Darkness. Raffaello...he could feel the power inside of him, merging with the shadows. It was waiting for a chance, wanting to destroy.

Raffaello could sense the evil in every fiber of who he was. The boy, he would be no savior. He wanted to be one more than anything as his hand clenched down on nothing but air. He knew in his heart the truth: Raffaello could never grasp the light...it was never meant for him. It protected, yes, but it also destroyed. The child was of Darkness.

"Almost there!" Vivi thought to himself as the buildings of Twilight Town merged into his line of vision. He kept an inner mantra: "No time to stop, no time to stop, no time to--"

BAM! Vivi fell onto the pavement. "--stop?" his mantra broken, Vivi was greeted by brown sneakers and baggy black pants reminiscent of the style most kids here wore, then a purple shirt, complimented by a loose belt that held a Struggle bat. When he made it to the person's face, he saw a boy no older than Seifer with dark eyes and silver hair held up in a ponytail. The boy stared back in return.

Familiar green eyes poked over the stranger's shoulder. "Vivi! Are you okay?" Olette asked, kneeling down next to him. Vivi nodded, and the stranger decided now was a good time to talk.

"You're not hurt, are you? That was a bad tumble!" ...He sounded friendly and not at all cocky, like he was enthusiastic and willing to take on any challenge the world threw his way.

"I'm fine!" Vivi said, touched that they seemed genuinely concerned.

The silver-haired boy smiled and bent over, hand outstretched to help Vivi. Vivi just stared at the palm offered to him and the boy laughed, "Unless you like sitting on the ground, you should probably take it."

Vivi was surprised by how sincere the boy's grip was as he was pulled to his feet. Olette smiled, "This is Vivi! He's quiet, but he's really nice."

Vivi felt awkward by the compliment. The other boy released his hand and smiled again, "Hi, Vivi. I'm Luneth!"

Luneth seemed to feel like that was all the introduction he needed, so Olette mentioned that Luneth was new to their class and that she was in charge of showing him around. Olette reached into her pocket and pulled out a red pouch, "Actually, I was just telling Luneth about sea-salt ice cream. Why don't you wait here and I'll get us all some? ...My treat!"

Vivi was about to protest when Luneth responded, "That sounds great. I can hang out with the infamous Vivi!"

With that, Olette dashed off...leaving them alone. Luneth seemed friendly enough, but Vivi's shyness took over. Vivi glanced up at Luneth to try and read his expression, but all he saw was an easygoing one that seemed to say he really had no care in the world and shared none of Vivi's insecurities.

He looked at the Struggle bat strapped to Luneth's belt, "...You play Struggle?" Vivi asked, regretting the question the second it left his mouth. "Of course he plays Struggle! He wouldn't carry the bat around if he didn't...would he?"

Luneth rubbed the back of his head, "Actually, I'm just learning! I'm borrowing this bat," his words were accompanied by laughter, "I'm pretty awful!"

"...If he's so bad, then why is he trying?" Vivi thought to himself. He looked down at the ground, "I'm not very good at Struggle."

"That's not what I heard." The friendly tone was still there, but Luneth's statement was made with a serious undercurrent.

Luneth's determined glance caught Vivi off-guard. He was new to Twilight Town...what could the other boy possibly know?

"I can't stand Seifer." Luneth said, as if that made sense. It didn't. ...If anything, it just added to Vivi's confusion.

"...Seifer?" Vivi asked finally when it became clear that Luneth wanted a response from him before continuing.

Luneth removed the Struggle bat from his belt. "Yeah. In class, he kept talking about the rules I'm supposed to follow. If Hayner hadn't decked him, I would have!"

That wasn't new. Hayner and Seifer never got along. Vivi got the impression there was more to the story though.

The Struggle bat swung in the air like a sword, as if Luneth wasn't accustomed to using one, "Hayner was showing me how to play Struggle and Seifer started going on-and-on about how I'd never improve if I was coached by a 'lamer.' Then he said that 'Vivi was a better Struggle player than Hayner.'"

Vivi was flabbergasted: "...Me?"

The reassuring smile came back. "Yeah. Seifer said you might not be very confident in Struggle but that you're more talented than Hayner and me combined."

"Seifer said that...about me?" Vivi felt like it couldn't be true, but Luneth didn't strike him as a liar.

Luenth nodded. "When he talked about you, Seifer seemed a little nicer. He's still a jerk," he said, patting the back of Vivi's head like he was trying to force confidence into it, "but even jerks have nice qualities."

Olette came running into view holding three sea-salt ice creams, "Here you go! Sorry to keep you all waiting."

She and Vivi watched in curiosity as Luneth tried it, knowing sea-salt ice cream was an acquired taste...the earlier conversation all but forgotten as Luneth made a grimace during his first bite, stubbornly trying a few more.

"Vivi!" an angry shout came from behind them and Vivi nearly dropped his ice cream as he turned around to see the displeased faces of Seifer, Fuu, and Rai.

Luneth smirked as they got closer, "Vivi here was just giving me Struggle pointers."

Seifer frowned and then matched Luneth’s smirk with a cockier one, "Doesn't matter. You'd still suck either way."

Olette and Vivi glanced at each other before Luneth laughed again, "I'll prove you wrong one day!"

Seifer crossed his arms, "There's a Struggle Tournament soon, so we'll just have to see, won't we?"”

Not waiting for a response, the three Disciplinary Committee members walked away...Vivi's heart sinking as they went, but then Seifer shouted back to him: "Vivi! What are you doing still hanging out with that lamer?!? We're leaving NOW!"

Vivi jumped up in surprise happily. "It was nice to meet you, Luneth! Thank you for the ice cream, Olette!" he said before focusing his attention on keeping up with Seifer.

Luneth smiled before trying the ice cream again, "Yep, even jerks have nice qualities."
