Two short fics where I am very cruel to Kain... DX

Title: A Change in Plans
Summary: At one point in IV, Cecil has to make a decision: Do what Kain wants, or else never see Rosa again. The events involved in that particular section are also highly circumstantial. (i.e. They would have all died at the end of one dungeon if not for magic weeds.)
So, I couldn't help but ask... What if Cecil had made the opposite decision?
Characters/Pairings: Cecil, Kain, Rosa, Golbez
Word count: 920
Rating/warnings: Spoilers for an old game? PG for character death?
Both options would lead to disaster. Good choice, bad choice, they were both and neither. What Goblez planned to do with the crystals, no one was certain of anything. His previous actions indicated only that he would leave more tragedy in his wake.
Cecil would not be a part of it. Too much blood is already on his hands, and to take yet another crystal from pacifists? If they refused to let him have it, which was likely, he would not take it by force. He cannot bear to lose Rosa, but he doubts Kain would harm her, and her life is but one in comparison to the many that may perish if Golbez accomplishes his goals. It is in those lives that the Paladin refuses to aid Golbez and his traitorous friend.
♠♠♠♠♠♠
"You assured me he would comply." It was impossible to see the expression on Goblez's face, but the sharp anger in his voice rang clear throughout the hall.
"An unexpected turn of events. I was certain he would never desert her." The Dragoon's grip tightened on his spear; his own position was now uncertain.
“Most disappointing. Kain, procure the crystal in his place. You can bring along a small number of troops if you see fit.”
Kain was convinced this was his punishment for his own failed plan. Further, Golbez realized that he also fancied Rosa, and if he refused, as he had tried to before, it would only result in both her and him being disposed of.
♠♠♠♠♠♠
There were times when Kain thought he heard a small, fleeting voice telling him to cease while he had the chance, but he could not discern from where it came. The thought of finally having what he has always desired overpowered all else, even if he did have to take a few unpleasant actions to achieve it.
When he reached Troia, he and the monsters Golbez had sent with him quickly reached the Chamber of the Epopts. An easy task that yielded no results, as he learned the crystal had been stolen by a Dark Elf.
“Why they would leave their crystal undefended, and allow even a fiend such as that take it?” he pondered, but his line of thought was quickly interrupted by the monsters he himself had brought. Even under Golbez’s command, they lacked self-control, and in their disappointment at not finding what was sought, began turning on the Epopts.
The Troians did not train fighters; it did not take long for the screams in the room to silence completely. The dragoon felt that this was wrong; a part of him heard a voice consoling him, telling him that everything is alright if he gets what he desires in the end, but he could not shake the other feeling that this simply wasn’t the case. That something terrible had happened here. Conflicted, and with limited authority over them, Kain was incapable of doing anything other than watching it unfold.
♠♠♠♠♠♠
“After all of that, it will be better to get what I came for.”
With that, he entered Lodestone Cavern, only to be brought swiftly to the ground. A magnetic force weighed his metal armor down, and much to his dismay, the only solution he could find was to discard all his armor.
As he managed to free himself, he emerged in nothing but his underpants. After attempting to lift his spear from the ground to no avail, he decided to search around the entrance for anything that could be used as a weapon. At first he only found swords, presumably discarded by adventurers who had discovered the same difficulty he did, but eventually came across a staff next to an inexperienced mage. Returning to where his spear was, he hacked it against it until the wooden top made a sharpened point.
That proved efficient to deal with the enemies throughout the cave, as the enemies fell to the force behind his jumps. Yet it required more effort, and he was exhausted by the time he reached the Dark Elf’s nest.
He was expecting a monster similar to the ones in the cavern, albeit slightly stronger. His assumptions proved incorrect, as the elf dodged all of his attacks and almost seemed to be mocking him. When it finally decided to stop playing with him, Kain briefly wondered what he was even doing there, a question that made him realize how his actions had not been not entirely his own.
He wished he could apologize for everything as he collapsed to the ground.
♠♠♠♠♠♠
Rosa was now deemed most useful to Golbez if she was out of his sight. The days quickly began to blend together in the dungeons, and a single day felt as if it lasted weeks, but she never lost hope that Cecil would come for her.
As thirst starts to set in, she began to wonder if he is still alive, as that’s the only reason he wouldn’t come in aid her in her mind. She then rejects this notion, as he would not be killed so easily. It must be only a minor setback.
She never learned the truth.
♠♠♠♠♠♠
Golbez had enough of his minions failing him. He decided to acquire the crystal himself, with the aid of his remaining archfiends. Once Golbez discarded his armor, they almost effortlessly got through the cavern and defeated the troublesome thief.
In spite of everything, Golbez had now acquired the Earth Crystal anyway. To him, the end result was the still the same.

Title: Kain's Failed Love Letter
Summary: Kain tries to tell Rosa his feelings. He fails.
Characters/Pairings: Kain, mentions of Rosa and Cecil
Word count: 227
Rating/warnings: Spoilers for a not-quite-as-old game, as a couple of sentences reference statements he only makes in the sequel?
A/N: As mentioned, this was for the Epistolary Short Fic Contest at
ultima_arena, hence the letter format. ;X I was afraid this was horribly OOC, but then it ended up placing, so now I'm more proud of it, heh. XD
Dear Rosa,
Cecil is a good man, and I'm happy for you. He's strong, kind, and brave. The two of you are similar in that way, maybe even too similar. Before you two become any closer, I wanted you to know that I [a bunch of angrily scribbled out words follow]
When we were younger, I admired your grace, temperament, and compassion. I still do. You heal people for a living, and don’t give up your dreams even when told you can’t be a white mage and in love with him. You've become bordering on perfect, and I am still following in my father's footsteps while trying to not become as cold as he. Someone to [more scribbled out words] I am cold, but you
Damn this. I know I'll never give a letter to her. I wish this could stop. I want them to be happy. I don't want to suffer.
We have to work together. He, the captain of the Red Wings. Me, the Commander of the Dragoons. When I see him now, and he looks happy... I [shoddily scribbled out words, behind them "think of you" is vaguely visible] We were both raised by the same man. We've always been together, and you between us. You would stop us from fighting. Now I have to stop myself from fighting because of you.
Sincerely,
Kain
P.S. And now I’m going to destroy this letter before it can see the light of day.
