"This one looks amazing!"
"Yeah, and it fits him too. What are we waiting for? Let's buy it already!"
The sheath lay on the counter in front of them. It had a simple but elegant design to it consisting of blues, whites, and soft tones of gold. Behind it, the Black Mage who was watching over the store waited with a patient smile on his darkened face. Everyone in Mysidia knew of the twins' exuberance and were rather used to it by now.
The brown-haired girl's eyes rolled in their characteristic fashion when dealing with her twin brother's pushiness. Fishing through her pockets, she procured the necessary Gill and set it on the counter (she always insisted on holding onto their money when going into stores, afraid that Palom would try to spend it all on something frivolous when she wasn't looking—such as when he bought a Flame Rod despite the Elder wanting him to look into learning White Magic earlier).
As the Black Mage counted the money, she picked up the sheath...noting the lightness of it in her hands since it was without a sword yet. It would indeed make a wonderful gift, she decided. Practical and fitting for the person it was intended to go to.
Palom was tapping his foot impatiently, looking ready to bolt the second the transaction was officially complete. The sound began to get louder with each passing second to signal his growing eagerness.
"...You know, I kind of wish Cecil really WAS my brother. He'd probably be a much better one than you can be at times." Porom told him pointedly, finding herself once again slightly annoyed at a habit of his she found somewhat impolite.
The two often squabbled like this, and, naturally, Palom didn’t seem to take it seriously (truthfully, it was better than her smacking him upside the head as she sometimes did when she was REALLY annoyed at his antics).
He shrugged his shoulders indifferently and gave a quick retort, "That's funny. Here I was thinking he’d probably be a better sister than you can be at times too."
There was a slight pause after this. Stifling the urge to smile ever-so-slightly, Porom mentally counted to three in her head before glancing over at her brother to see if he'd realized what he'd mistakenly just said. The sullen glare in his sharp brown eyes, coupled with the tinge of red that was deepening on his cheeks seemed proof enough of that. He remained stubbornly silent, not wanting to say anything in case it gave her more of an opening to poke fun at him than she already had currently.
Feeling pity for her twin's growing embarrassment, Porom decided to be merciful...just this once. "I know what you mean. It's been really fun spending time with him, hasn’t it? It really does feel like we have another sibling now."
The Black Mage nodded approvingly after counting the money, signaling that it was the correct amount for the purchase. After thanking him politely, Porom turned and headed towards the store exit--Palom close behind.
"Yeah...not that there’s anything wrong with the one I have already, I guess. Nothing too major, at any rate." he responded, smirking mischievously at her.
"And there isn't really anything wrong with the one I have either. At least nothing too big." she countered just as playfully.
The two grinned at each other, friendly relations quickly restored. That had always been the way it was between them, and it was something neither twin ever wanted to take for granted.
"Let's do our best from this point on, okay?" Porom said, gripping the sheath tightly in her hands, "For both ourselves and Cecil."
The confident grin that had become Palom's trademark flashed quickly across his features, "Always."
Once outside, they spotted the familiar outline and white hair that unmistakably belonged to their traveling companion. He was deep in conversation with the Great Sage Tellah and the Elder. The way his mouth was drawn into a straight line currently belied the seriousness that always lay at the center of his quest. Seeing his determination and willingness to face his own inner darkness were the main reasons the twins had decided that they always wanted to cheer him on in their own way.
Taking in deep breaths, Palom and Porom both exhaled deeply and began running as fast as their shorter legs could carry them across the grass of Mysidia. The sheath was being waved excitedly in the young girl's hands as the two shouted out together in excited, eager voices.
"Hey, Cecil! Look at what we have for you!"
