Description: Rasler-related from Final Fantasy XII scenes for the Picspam Activity over at [livejournal.com profile] ff_minigames (but *actual* Rasler! Those familiar with the game's story will know what that means O_O;). FFXII SPOILERS!

Well, the challenge was just for picspams of favorite scenes or a character you like and the scenes involving them. My sister and I have this strange appreciation/fondness for minor characters in most stories...and the FF series is no exception, so when I first heard about this challenge I was all "Oh, I really want to do a minor character tribute since they seem to get overlooked sometimes!" ...Only to discover that minor characters don't necessarily lend well to massive picspams considering they're not the main characters and aren't in the respective games as much (despite sometimes being very important to the story!). O_O; But, then I remembered the awesomeness that is Rasler from FFXII and my idea was salvaged, thanks to him showing up in quite a few FMVs that happen to get screencapped a lot! XD YAY, RASLER! ♥ Actually, I love Rasler so I was quite happy to remember him. Him and Reks are two of my favorite minor FF characters anyways since they're quite important to FFXII's plot and characters in it. Rasler's story in particular sets up the Archadian Empire's conquest from the start of the game, as well as helps in part to define Ashe's character and later development...as his image is not only used by the Occuria to represent *everything* Ashe had lost in order to try to incite her towards revenge, but it is her remembrance of him as he truly was (a kind, passionate, hopeful person) that leads her towards not taking the revenge path in the end. So, I hope you all enjoy this probably random Rasler picspam! I was very tempted to put in scans from the official manga as well since I love his added story scenes in that, but I figured I should stick to the game. ♥ ...I also apologize if it fails since I've never done a picspam before and I wasn't 100% sure how to approach it. O_O;

The wedding parade. I liked how genuinely happy he and Ashe were here. There were no actual words, but the body language and expressions are very warm.

The actual wedding ceremony. ...Not much else to say about it other than that it was supposed to be symbolism for more peaceful times for both of their kingdoms, and it was very sweet. Even without knowing much about their characters at this point, you kind of just wanted them to have a happy future together. But then...

...tragedy for Rasler strikes as news reaches Rabanastre that his kindgom of Nabradia was attacked and his father was killed in combat. Worried not only about his family (and truly saddened by his father's death), but also for his people...Rasler decides to go to defend his homeland and Dalmasca, his new home. Rasler is shown to be hopeful here and passionate about protecting the things he holds dear. Exchanging a significant look with Ashe before addressing the people. Interestingly enough, compared to Ashe's reasoning later in the game for why she is fighting, Rasler here is not going in for revenge despite being upset over the heavy causalities his kingdom suffered and his father's death...rather he is fighting to give hope to people and to protect those he views as important to him. This aspect of his character is later addressed by Ashe when she says he was not the type to go for base revenge. Also showcases that, had events gone differently, Rasler probably would have eventually been a great leader.

But, events don't go differently and Rasler is struck by an arrow from the enemy. Despite Basch's attempts at getting him first-aid quickly, Rasler falls into a coma and eventually dies a few days later. Ironic that he was wearing more armor than most of the soldiers were...but, MOVING ON.

Ashe flashback about Rasler. This is actually one of my favorite scenes in the game...it almost came out of nowhere as she was triggered to remember it by another story event, but I love how it reinforces the importance of Rasler's character to her own personal story. It is shortly after they were married and she finds him on a balcony contemplating what people are saying about their marriage. He says he almost wishes they had met each other in normal circumstances because he thinks it is sad that people think they're together only for political reasons, but at the same time he is glad it gives their people peace of mind. Taking his hand, Ashe states that she doesn't mind playing that role and asks him if he minds it...to which he replies he would have no other role before the flashback fades on his smile to her. I love how this small scene showcases just how much they were actually in love with other...despite the political match, they genuinely cared for one another. It is this scene that reinforces Ashe's remembrance of Rasler as he truly was later on in the game as it depicts him as a peaceful, hopeful, and idealistic person. I also liked that it showcased that she wasn't just going to forget him even though she rarely mentions him over the course of the game itself and she moves on from this scene without harping on it. I liked this scene from a Rasler perspective, but I also liked it as a showcase on Ashe too.

The ending...techincally, the only scene on here without images of Rasler, but the imagery of his ring is very symbolic for him. In the game itself, Balthier takes the ring as both collateral and to test her drive for revenge. In a way, it almost symbolized Rasler himself in that Ashe was basically willing to give up his memory and what he would have done in order to get the revenge for her kingdom she was so blindly devoted to. Her remembering that the Rasler she knew and loved wouldn't want that for her is what enables her to not go through with the revenge (as it even reminds her of what she believed made Dalmasca great)...and as such, Balthier returns the ring to her--symbolizing that she was no longer that character that gave up the ring in the first place. She has her memories of Rasler and her memories of the events of FFXII to help guide her in her new role as Queen (interestingly enough, she's standing on the balcony she found Rasler on in the flashback scene as he was looking over the city). Rasler's image is the first to show during the ending credits of the game despite his not being a main character...perhaps due to his importance in the introduction story sequences. He is also referred to and mentioned in FFXII: Revenant Wings. ...THE END.

I enjoyed reading this! I never really paid that much attention to Rasler to be completely honest and sort of forgot about him at times considering how long it took me to finish XII, but you're right, he was vitally important to the plot on multiple levels and was a rather interesting contrast to Ashe's mentality towards the end. You're making me wish he was in the game more. ;X

I really loved how subtle Ashe's memories of him were. They could have been so ham-handed with having him just pop up everywhere, but I think it was done really well, and sensitively too, which is always nice.

Can I also say too, I love how you discussed the symbolism! I'd honestly never thought of it like that before, haha. MY EYES ARE OPENED! But no, seriously. That's gonna put a different slant on the game, and no mistake!
