It's like there was no one else in the room

Description: Scenes from the Graduation ball from Final Fantasy VIII for the Picspam Activity over at [livejournal.com profile] ff_minigames. Should be spoiler free!

It's also pretty much a fanfiction really as my word count will show (the "fic" part hit 984 words!). I kind of got carried away I'm sorry!

Whatever you want to call this mess, it's under the cut! I hope you enjoy it.

"Boy Meets Girl"

He's intent on holding up the wall all night, because he honestly doesn't want to be there. In Squall's mind it's stupid to hold a party in honor of someone when they absolutely hate parties. He knows he's being petty though, because it's clear that the other SeeD graduates (Zell and Selphie) are enjoying themselves.

She's intent on fitting in. While her main purpose of the event is getting to the Headmaster to ask for his support, everything had to be done when the time was right. So for now does her best to fit in and make it seem like she belongs.

The shooting star is fleeting in its beauty, but he notices it. She notices it too and more importantly she notices that he's taken the time to watch it fall as well. He finds her interest confusing, but when she walks over he's swept away by her energy from the start.

He never stood a chance.

Girl Whirls Into Boy's Life

He's the cutest guy at the party and the fact that he could enjoy little things like shooting stars makes him the perfect guy to spend a little time with. Not to mention she'd be doing him a favor by getting him to lighten up a bit, parties weren't very fun if you're a wallflower all night. Maybe for a little bit, she could turn him from wallflower to Prince Charming. Crazier thing could happen, so why not?

He doesn't want to dance. She isn't inclined to listen to his refusal though. As she grabs his hand, he can't help but notice how warm and soft her hand is in his. Before he knows it, she's leading him onto the dance floor. If anyone asked, he let her because he didn't want to hurt her. In reality, she could have knocked him over with a feather if she'd wanted to. Who knew a simple touch could be so surprising?

Boy Tries Not To Dance With Girl

If she got a proper dance out of him then everyone would want to dance! He might not be the most social person ever, but he's noticed the way girls and guys have both looked at him in the past. He's not really sure what about him they find appealing, he just knows that they do. So he tries not to dance, in fact he tries to dance as poorly as he can on purpose. Maybe she'll give up and let him leave!

It turns out that the wallflower can't dance. At first she's not sure what to make of this fact, but after a while she realizes that his awkwardness is actually appealing somehow. Then and there she decides not to give up until they've managed at least one dance. So when he tries to leave, she stops him and pulls him back not realizing how much just the feel of her hands against his causes his mind to short.

If only Seifer knew, maybe puberty boy wasn't so far off after all.

Girl Shows Spark

The dance continues as awkward as ever including a dance that has her giggling and leaves him honestly confused for a moment.

That's when it happens. Another couple, one who's dancing properly ends up on a collision course and the two couples bump into each other. The other SeeD and his girl give them cranky looks, but she doesn't seem to care. Instead she just sticks her tongue out at them playfully and tells them to lighten up a little.

He's not sure what to make of that, but when she turns back to him and smiles (her eyes smiling before her mouth does he notices) there's only one thing he can do. She deserves better than this farce of him pretending that he can't dance.

They Dance

So when she takes his hand he leads her into the dance properly. He'd never admit to feeling a tiny surge of pride at the flicker of surprise in her eyes when she realizes that he can indeed dance after all that, but it's there.

After that they both lose themselves to the moment. He soon realizes that dancing isn't so bad if it's with someone like her. As he spins her around his hand lightly pressing against her back each time she turns, she can't help but hope the lighting is forgiving enough to hide the blush coloring her cheeks.

As he pulls her back in the lights dim, not even thinking about it he pulls her closer instead of continuing to dance like everyone around them. He takes a moment to enjoy just how right it feels having this complete stranger so close before the flash of fireworks catches his attention.

Girl Leaves As Quickly As She Appears

As she looks up at the fireworks, all too conscious of the way his hands press against hers, she can't help but think back on just how perfect the dance they'd just shared was. She'd certainly asked the right person! It's a memory that she'll now carry with her forever. As the fireworks fade she tears her eyes away from his face, surprised to realize that everyone else is still dancing. Then her eyes fall onto the figure of someone she's been waiting for all night - t he reason she's here.

He turns his attention away from the sky to his dance partner just in time to realize that her attention is now elsewhere. A tiny smile that he hadn't even noticed vanishes as she cranes around him to look at someone else. Then before he knows it, she's saying her excuses and walking away through the crowd.

As he watches her back, he can only think one thing. Why hadn't he thought to ask her name? Oh well, what was one night's fancy anyway? Tomorrow he would just push thoughts of a girl with dark hair and eyes who could throw him for a loop out of his mind and focus on important things like missions. That's all there is to it.

SeeD are mercenaries, they shouldn't be spending their time thinking about silly thing like attraction (or god forbid, love at first sight).

And that's that! The end of my first official picspam ever! Now you can all see the dance through my overly sentimental and romantic eyes! I'm sure I'm taking a few things for granted in this scene, but I don't really care. :P

Lolz, I already mentioned that I liked this on the post in your LJ, but I will mention it again! XD I loved reading your "fic" part too, hehe. ♥

Aw, that was so sweet! I loved the written segments, and I thought it was great how you put inner thoughts to the screen caps of that iconic scene. ♥ :)

That was pretty cute. I've always been fond of Rinoa's role as sort of a whirlwind of happiness and light that sweeps into Squall's life and knocks him over, lol.

[identity profile] virago-queen.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno. We missed each other in the friending meme? *adds*

As much as I dislike Rinoa's character in certain other parts of the game, the ballroom scene has always been a favorite of mine. I feel like it perfectly represents their relationship (minus her leaving at the end, anyways).

That does sound like an interesting idea. A universe where Rin doesn't hate her dad?

I have a persistent plot-bunny about a Squall that grows up in Esthar with Laguna and Elle, and a Laguna+Julia baby that is a Galbadian SeeD. It's been hanging around for literally years, lol. Thus far I have resisted it. >_>

[identity profile] virago-queen.livejournal.com 2011-04-04 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
*patpat* Feel better?

Eh, it's mostly the way that the plot handles her (and Squall, to an extent). I guess it just bugs the crap out of me that I can't use her for like a quarter of the game, lol. Plus the whole Squall carrying her cross-continent on his back thing has always seemed a little...much, rofl.

I hear you, though. Garnet is one of my favorite characters, but sometimes I wanna smack her >_> A lot of people really dislike her, though, but that's cool. Every character has good points and bad points. *shrug*

That would be cool. The potential meet-up between Laguna and Julia would interesting. xD

Yeah, that plot-bunny comes in two forms: the one that goes "ooh! Make a Mary Sue badass original character!" that I ignore, and the one that goes "you know, if Squall wasn't at Balamb, maybe Seifer would have made SeeD and been the one to go help the Timber Owls..." and that one makes me curious and want to write Seifer/Squall/Rinoa.

I knew Trabia didn't have SeeDs, but...huh, I guess I just didn't think about Galbadia not having them, either. ^^; That makes sense, I guess. Oh well.

You are much more of a romantic than me, lol. I like romance and love stories as much as the next girl, but I have a threshold. If it gets too mushy, I just point and laugh at it. I think that comes from having so many guy friends. ^^; But give me an understated love story like, say, Balthier/Fran, and I swoon for days, hehe. (The exception is Alistair from Dragon Age. That man is sweet to the point of being cavity-inducing, but I can't resist him! It must be the snarkiness.) But that's why I'm much crazier about, say, Fang/Vanille than I am Snow/Serah. *shrug*

Everything involving Laguna is awkward. xD

Oh man. My very first online handle was "Marina Leonhart." ^_^;; Thankfully now my ridiculous OCs stay in my head where they belong.

Rofl @ that name. And oh dear baby Jesus, Renesmee. *shudder* Twilight is pretty much just bad Mary Sue fanfiction anyways.

I'm trying to think of how that would work. Obviously Fujin and Raijin would tag along on the mission just because. Ultimecia would need a different Knight, Quistis would have no reason to be in Timber.... Would Quisty even get downgraded to a normal SeeD? Didn't her interest in Squall have something to do with her getting demoted? *can't remember* ...Squall wouldn't be so emo since he wouldn't have abandonment issues, and we wouldn't meet him until Esthar... *pokes plot bunny* Hmm.

I'm actually the opposite. Was very girly growing up, but now I act more like "one of the guys."

Fuuna...Lagury...Jaine...Rulia...All of those are pretty awful. Jedea is definitely better, lol.

I thought about Nida, but I think that'd be kinda difficult, since he has next to no personality (and is apparently pretty average on the combat side, according to Cid). What I actually came up with was Zell - he's present at that point of the game already, restless by nature, would chafe like mad under Seifer's leadership, and is shown to be very close to Edea in the game. So the party would be Seifer, Fujin, Raijin, Selphie, Rinoa, Irvine, and then Squall. Quistis would make cameos, much like Ellone. Speaking of which, there would be no reason for Elle to send the team into the past, since she would have never gone to the Orphanage and whatnot.

I imagine a non-emotionally screwed-up Squall would mostly just be quiet, sarcastic, and very blunt. I imagine him having a very dry sense of humor, lol. You're right about the scars - I'd have to put them in somewhere, just not sure where.

I loved pink, Barbie dolls, and was obsessed with Sailor Moon and fairy tales and princess movies. From the ages of four to twelve, I was either a princess or a witch every year for Halloween (and once I was a princess-witch! lol) I didn't like having my hair messed with and stuff, though, and refused to let my mother dress me, so she was sad, too. xD; I was a stubborn child.

My main problem with Nida is that I'd want to keep a lot of the events really similar to how they are in-game, and I can't really think of a reason to send Nida on that mission, too. Plus I'd have to make up a bunch of stuff about him and I don't want to chance turning a bit character into a Gary Stu. ^^;

Evil!Zell intrigues me. Also that would give me an opportunity to change his characterization some, since I don't particularly care for him most of the time.

Lol, yeah. I might try to fit that in somehow, somewhere... Because notemo!Squall facepalming at his dad is a pretty amusing mental image. I don't see Squall and Laguna having a really close relationship in this, but sort of not knowing what to do with each other, since they're so different (and Laguna's not exactly father of the year material). Like...they love each other, but it's just really awkward because they have nothing in common, lol.

I do too. >_>; If I should decide to embark on something of this proportion, would you mind being my beta? I'm not really comfortable enough with the characterization stuff to do it all by myself and feel like I'm doing the source material justice. Plus I get bored with longfic easily, but maybe if I had a slavedriver beta, I'd be more motivated, lol.
