It's like there was no one else in the room

Description: Scenes from the Graduation ball from Final Fantasy VIII for the Picspam Activity over at [livejournal.com profile] ff_minigames. Should be spoiler free!

It's also pretty much a fanfiction really as my word count will show (the "fic" part hit 984 words!). I kind of got carried away I'm sorry!

Whatever you want to call this mess, it's under the cut! I hope you enjoy it.

"Boy Meets Girl"

He's intent on holding up the wall all night, because he honestly doesn't want to be there. In Squall's mind it's stupid to hold a party in honor of someone when they absolutely hate parties. He knows he's being petty though, because it's clear that the other SeeD graduates (Zell and Selphie) are enjoying themselves.

She's intent on fitting in. While her main purpose of the event is getting to the Headmaster to ask for his support, everything had to be done when the time was right. So for now does her best to fit in and make it seem like she belongs.

The shooting star is fleeting in its beauty, but he notices it. She notices it too and more importantly she notices that he's taken the time to watch it fall as well. He finds her interest confusing, but when she walks over he's swept away by her energy from the start.

He never stood a chance.

Girl Whirls Into Boy's Life

He's the cutest guy at the party and the fact that he could enjoy little things like shooting stars makes him the perfect guy to spend a little time with. Not to mention she'd be doing him a favor by getting him to lighten up a bit, parties weren't very fun if you're a wallflower all night. Maybe for a little bit, she could turn him from wallflower to Prince Charming. Crazier thing could happen, so why not?

He doesn't want to dance. She isn't inclined to listen to his refusal though. As she grabs his hand, he can't help but notice how warm and soft her hand is in his. Before he knows it, she's leading him onto the dance floor. If anyone asked, he let her because he didn't want to hurt her. In reality, she could have knocked him over with a feather if she'd wanted to. Who knew a simple touch could be so surprising?

Boy Tries Not To Dance With Girl

If she got a proper dance out of him then everyone would want to dance! He might not be the most social person ever, but he's noticed the way girls and guys have both looked at him in the past. He's not really sure what about him they find appealing, he just knows that they do. So he tries not to dance, in fact he tries to dance as poorly as he can on purpose. Maybe she'll give up and let him leave!

It turns out that the wallflower can't dance. At first she's not sure what to make of this fact, but after a while she realizes that his awkwardness is actually appealing somehow. Then and there she decides not to give up until they've managed at least one dance. So when he tries to leave, she stops him and pulls him back not realizing how much just the feel of her hands against his causes his mind to short.

If only Seifer knew, maybe puberty boy wasn't so far off after all.

Girl Shows Spark

The dance continues as awkward as ever including a dance that has her giggling and leaves him honestly confused for a moment.

That's when it happens. Another couple, one who's dancing properly ends up on a collision course and the two couples bump into each other. The other SeeD and his girl give them cranky looks, but she doesn't seem to care. Instead she just sticks her tongue out at them playfully and tells them to lighten up a little.

He's not sure what to make of that, but when she turns back to him and smiles (her eyes smiling before her mouth does he notices) there's only one thing he can do. She deserves better than this farce of him pretending that he can't dance.

They Dance

So when she takes his hand he leads her into the dance properly. He'd never admit to feeling a tiny surge of pride at the flicker of surprise in her eyes when she realizes that he can indeed dance after all that, but it's there.

After that they both lose themselves to the moment. He soon realizes that dancing isn't so bad if it's with someone like her. As he spins her around his hand lightly pressing against her back each time she turns, she can't help but hope the lighting is forgiving enough to hide the blush coloring her cheeks.

As he pulls her back in the lights dim, not even thinking about it he pulls her closer instead of continuing to dance like everyone around them. He takes a moment to enjoy just how right it feels having this complete stranger so close before the flash of fireworks catches his attention.

Girl Leaves As Quickly As She Appears

As she looks up at the fireworks, all too conscious of the way his hands press against hers, she can't help but think back on just how perfect the dance they'd just shared was. She'd certainly asked the right person! It's a memory that she'll now carry with her forever. As the fireworks fade she tears her eyes away from his face, surprised to realize that everyone else is still dancing. Then her eyes fall onto the figure of someone she's been waiting for all night - t he reason she's here.

He turns his attention away from the sky to his dance partner just in time to realize that her attention is now elsewhere. A tiny smile that he hadn't even noticed vanishes as she cranes around him to look at someone else. Then before he knows it, she's saying her excuses and walking away through the crowd.

As he watches her back, he can only think one thing. Why hadn't he thought to ask her name? Oh well, what was one night's fancy anyway? Tomorrow he would just push thoughts of a girl with dark hair and eyes who could throw him for a loop out of his mind and focus on important things like missions. That's all there is to it.

SeeD are mercenaries, they shouldn't be spending their time thinking about silly thing like attraction (or god forbid, love at first sight).

And that's that! The end of my first official picspam ever! Now you can all see the dance through my overly sentimental and romantic eyes! I'm sure I'm taking a few things for granted in this scene, but I don't really care. :P

Aw, that was so sweet! I loved the written segments, and I thought it was great how you put inner thoughts to the screen caps of that iconic scene. ♥ :)
