The Roads Not Taken

Class: Black Mage
Title: The Roads Not Taken
Summary: A bunch of things that never happened in FFIV. The 'twins' one was written for the latest weekly challenge (role-reversal) at [livejournal.com profile] airship_lounge.
Characters/Pairings: Cecil, Rosa, Kain, Edward/Anna, Tellah
Word count: 323
Rating/warnings: None.

i. dark knight

Intentions are not always sufficient; ordeals are not always won.

Sometimes, there is no paladin, no knight in shining armour; only a man too good to be a dark knight and not pure enough to be a holy warrior.

This is how most stories end.

ii. dragoon

This is not how his story ends.

He takes up the mantle his friend set down; he succeeds, but he succeeds alone. Duty requires sacrifice, and it is not such a painful thing to set aside an unrequited love, is it?

(Yes.)

iii. the lady in white

Cecil is kind; Kain devoted. They both love her; she knows this.

She wishes she could requite it.

iv. twin mages

The (“slightly!”) younger one is thoughtful, quiet, studious, everything one could wish for in a model student.

The fact that he is capable of setting almost anything aflame (and has done so, once or twice) – is only incidental.

Besides, he put the fires out – by himself – almost immediately.

His sister, on the other hand, is atypical. No other White Mage goes around telling the world when she’s learnt her first Cure spell. No other White Mage then proceeds to insist on demonstrating it on the nearest sick patient.

The fact that it worked well is something they don’t talk about.

v. song and story

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful maiden, the daughter of the wisest mage in the land. She was as kind as she was beautiful, and as graceful as she was kind, and she was in love with a wandering bard who swore life and loyalty to her until the end of his days.

He leaves the story unfinished. The best things in his life cannot be consigned to paper.

vi. the sage

He thought he’d lost his daughter.

Knowing that she is alive and well – and engaged to the Prince of Damcyan – makes him happy beyond belief.

He gives them both his blessing, but decides not to voice his desire for grandchildren.

Yet.

/loves this post. All of it. I chuckled at some of them, and others create almost this sense of sadness when you think about how the opposite is what truly happened. (Which is an excellent atmosphere for fanfiction to create ;X)

These are gorgeous, Mysti! I love how you set the scene and atmosphere with so little words <3

Oh wow... this just blew my mind. I find it really hard to find good FFIV fic, and this was just perfect. I especially loved how you juxtaposed the Cecil and Kain parts together with "This is how most stories end / This is not how his story ends" and the Edward and Tellah parts are so sad considering what actually happens in the game... THIS IS BREAKIN' MY HEART. Have you written anything else for FFIV?!

Awesome! I'll check that one out.

I actually found this listed on [livejournal.com profile] ff_press, and I followed the link since it was FFIV. THEN I would up checking out moogle_workshop-- I'm super excited to find a Final Fantasy fanfic comm that's actually active, and I'm totally submitting an application for ff-classchange so I can join & post. So all in all, I'm pretty glad I found this.

When I first started reading this fic, I was certain that the Cecil+Kain parts would be my favourite, simply because it's so different from what I expected of their stories. Cecil failing his trial, and Kain succeeding... brilliant.

But even while I loved the Cecil+Kain parts, I think the one that really got the emotion in me was Edward's alternate. I loved the way the first part does read like a song or a story or a legend. Also, Tellah. ;_;

Thank you for this, Myst!

Wow, you have a real talent for short fics! I love how you let the readers fill in the gaps themselves. I especially like how the first three link to each other.

POINTS

15 Points to Team Black Mage! :D

(I counted the "twin mages" story as a true drabble since it is exactly 100 words, and then everything else I combined as one fic for point-tallying purposes. I hope that is okay!)

...Oh wow, I really love how creative an idea this is. The Cecil, Rosa, and Kain stories were quite unique and interesting--and the one about Palom and Porom made me smile (it's different, but yet it still makes sense considering how their two personalities really did seem to mesh well in the game too! ♥). I found the Edward and Tellah stories to be my personal favorites though simply because of the emotional context considering what really happens in the game in regards to how their stories play out...it was rather touching and sad in a way to read their parts. BUT they're all really amazing, and very poetic in their imagery and description. You did a truly fantastic job with all of them! ♥
