{Fan Fic} Third Smile: Edge & Cuore
Back in Game 2 I had started a little writing prompt challenge for myself where I would write a short character introspective story for each of the main installment Final Fantasy games (the word prompt was "smile"). Lolz, I made it to a grand total of two stories then. O_O; But, I actually managed to continue the idea for at least one more fic! ...And this one isn't about a dead character this time, haha! I have no idea if I'll continue to just randomly post fics for this prompt or not, but I guess they're kind of like a "Smile Series" or something now. O_o

Title: Third Smile: Edge & Cuore
Summary: A fic focusing on two different games of hide-and-seek Edge plays. Pre-Final Fantasy IV and then post-FFIV: The After Years.
Characters/Pairings: Edge is the main focus of both "parts": the first part is with him as a young child and his attendant at Eblan Castle, while the second part focuses on him and Cuore after the ending of The After Years. Rydia, Edge's parents, and Rubicante are mentioned. Pairing-wise: if you squint *really* hard you might be able to interpret it as Edge x Rydia.
Word count: 1,317
Rating/warnings: G for sappiness, lolz! Spoilers for The After Years.
Legal Discalimer: I do not own FFIV and The After Years or any FFIV/The After Years characters! They are the rightful property of Square-Enix.
It was dark. The young prince had become almost numb to the cold touch of the wooden floorboards as he sat on them. In the beginning, he was attentive and took in all the details of his environment like a ninja should. The shadows had become his ally in this game of hide-and-seek, with only his silver hair being slightly visible in the darkness.
...At least, that's what he thought three hours ago when he had started playing this game at the suggestion of his older attendant. Now he was annoyed that the shadows seemed too good at concealing him.
Still, he truly was a skilled ninja to hide so well! The young boy would have congratulated himself if he wasn't bored out of his mind waiting to be found in a tiny little storage closet with absolutely nothing to keep him occupied.
Edge bit the side of his mouth to keep from shouting out loud. He would not let his frustration beat him! He should be thrilled that his Ninjutsu skills were so incredible that he had managed to stay stealthily hidden for such a long period of time.
...Unless, of course, no one was looking for him.
Edge narrowed his eyes at the possibility. Now that he suspected foul play, he had to admit that three hours did seem awfully long for a typical game of hide-and-seek.
Had he been forgotten? Had he been misled?
He tried to think back to the morning. He had begun his lessons shortly after seeing his mother and father off on some diplomatic mission...he'd be lying if he said he remembered where they were going or why they were going to wherever-it-was-that-they-were-going. All he knew was that he wanted to go with them instead of finding himself standing face-to-face with his jovial attendant.
The attendant asked him what he wanted to do that day and the young boy answered with the exact same thing he answered every time he was asked that question: go outside of Eblan Castle. All he got in response was a sad smile and a head shake, with the man telling Edge that he was afraid the prince getting to leave Eblan, even if for only a little while, was not very likely.
Edge thought he had hid his disappointment well. After all, he had never once left Eblan Castle before so he wasn't expecting that to change today.
It wasn't like he was angry or anything! He merely suggested that the attendant help him with his shuriken practice (for educational purposes, of course). ...When his attendant regained consciousness, he told Edge that they should try a new lesson: a simple game of hide-and-seek that would test the prince's ninja ability.
...But now, Edge was seriously starting to think his attendant had tricked him. The man probably wasn't even looking for him and he'd been in this lonely, boring storage closet for hours!
His eyes started to itch and burn. When he went to rub them with his hand he was surprised by the wetness he found there. He was crying! Edge, the Prince of Eblan, did not cry! He...he just couldn't see because his vision kept getting blurry for some reason.
A small little noise escaped from his mouth, followed by larger choked sobbing sounds. ...Except that Edge did not sob so it must have been some other noise that the child couldn't explain.
In that moment the door to the storage room swung open and Edge's wet eyes blinked at the sudden light. He could barely make out the form of his attendant in his watery vision while his pupils adjusted to the brightness of the hallway.
"Young Prince?" The attendant asked, "Are you all right?"
Edge stood up as quickly as his fallen asleep legs would allow, the grimace on his face at the sensation of feeling returning to them thankfully hidden by his partial mask: "Of...of course I am! I wasn't scared or anything."
He heard his attendant let out a relieved sigh, followed by a not-very-subtle chuckle. "Of course you weren't. You're the Prince of Eblan, after all." The man said, his hand gesturing towards the hallway behind him as Edge walked slowly out the door.
The older man shut the door behind them and smiled at the child: "You were hiding so well that even your parents have been looking for you ever since their return. I'm sure they'll be impressed by your skills."
"Really?!?" Edge couldn't help but yell as he broke into a run down the corridor in his excitement to see his parents, "C'mon! I want to tell them all about how well I hid from you! Maybe they'll let me leave the castle the next time they travel!"
He vaguely heard the shouts coming from the residents of Eblan Castle asking him to slow down before he hurt himself as he bolted towards the throne room, although he didn't heed them at all.

It was bright. The sun shone brightly down on Mist, warming even the air around them.
"You found me!" the green-haired girl in front of him laughed as Edge appeared right behind her, Rubicante's cloak fluttering in the light breeze.
Like usual, the King of Eblan's smile was hidden behind his partial mask, but his eyes visibly softened whenever he visited Mist. He couldn't quite keep his smile out of his tone either: "Of course I did. No one plays hide-and-seek better than me!"
Cuore made the expression on her face turn into an almost mock pout and Edge was amused by how much she looked like a young Rydia. Her speech was even starting to sound less-and-less like the Maenads they had known in the past with each of his visits. The little girl couldn't keep the farce going for very long though and her mock pout turned into something almost akin to an impish grin, "I've gotten better though, haven't I? I didn't even use magic this time!"
Edge nodded, although inwardly he laughed to himself...for he had noticed Cuore's hiding place about twenty minutes before he had decided to "find" her.
The sun was beginning to set and he knew he should be leaving for Eblan Castle before his people started worrying about his whereabouts. In the corner of his eye he saw Rydia getting food ready for her and Cuore's dinner.
Cuore must have sensed where his mind was wandering because her gaze shifted towards the direction of Eblan, "I guess you'll be leaving soon then?"
"Who knows?" Edge said, "One of these days I might just stay for dinner."
"You should have dinner now then! Rydia always makes some for you and then complains because you never stay for it."
The child's tiny hand grasped his bigger one, her fingers enthusiastically squeezing his as she started dragging him back to her home before even waiting to see his reaction.
"You won't stay too long in Eblan, will you? You need to come back quick so I can play some more! I promise I won't use magic at all next time!"
Edge was almost glad that his mask hid the smile that was breaking out on his face, "Sure, sure. We'll only play the best ninja games the next time I'm here."
"We're going to have so much fun!" Cuore exclaimed as she opened the door to the home she shared with Rydia. Edge was slightly embarrassed that a little girl apparently held so much sway over him and he cursed the fact that his eyes weren't hidden like his lips were: because even though he was happy, he found his vision getting slightly blurry.
He hoped that Rydia and Cuore didn't notice...because, even if there may have been happy tears in Edge's eyes, the King of Eblan certainly did not cry. Something must have just made his eyes water, is all.
