The Balamb Garden Library was quiet, as usual. The always-present soft humming that came with the recently discovered flight mechanic of the building, as well as the hushed whispers of the students and SeeD members (including the library staff and other faculty members) who were there being the only soft background noise of the place. They quickly faded from thought as one became lost in routine, like she was currently doing.
The girl was sorting through some of the books and magazines that had recently been returned. One could always tell when tests or assignments were coming up in some of the classes due to what types of books and other periodicals were being checked out and in...something she'd always found rather interesting in a way: a social butterfly she wasn't, but even as a small child she'd always found observing others rather fascinating.
Currently, a project on wild Chocobo populations becoming too comfortable approaching urban settings was approaching its due date...as was a test on radio broadcast frequencies and their impact on regions such as Dollet and even more remote areas such as the small town of Winhill. A glance at quite a few of the books coming back into the library showcased that they often had large selections devoted solely to those subjects.
The brown ponytail she customarily held her hair up with was tickling the back of her neck as she bent down to reshelf a particularly large book on Chocobos: how the younger student who had checked it out originally carried it around without straining his back she'd never know. Absentmindedly, she struck at her hair with her fingertips--only to have it tickle a different spot on the back of her neck instead.
"...You should try wearing it down sometime."
The voice came from right above her--and the girl looked up, startled. Grinning amusedly down at her was the tattooed face of Zell Dincht, a book clasped tightly in one of his hands. Her heart rate sped up at the sight of her crush so close, and she jerked awkwardly up...her cheeks already beginning to flush red due to embarrassment.
Don't panic, don't panic...try to start a conversation!
"Sorry, didn't mean to startle you when you were busy." Zell rubbed the back of his head with his hand awkwardly, a sudden nervousness to his tone and mannerisms that wasn't there before.
Her mouth suddenly felt very, very dry. "It's...it's okay." Her voice barely came out as a squeak.
Being this close to Zell was rather hard. Truth be told, a few months ago it would have been nearly impossible: then, she couldn't even muster the courage to talk to him properly.
She'd never been a very outgoing person. Her parents had enrolled her at Balamb Garden in the hopes that she'd become more confident, if nothing else--they hadn't expected her to even attempt graduation or anything of the sort at the time. But, surprisingly, her love of the academics and the faculty work she volunteered for had encouraged her to continue on with her studies despite her hesitancy in combat. She had even already been offered a full-time position on the staff once she did manage to take the exam and graduate.
Still, her inherent shyness kept her from socializing too much outside of her small group of friends. She was lucky if she managed to even stammer a greeting to Zell on a given day whenever she saw him at the library or somewhat else in the Garden--especially since she became even more self-conscious and awkward around him than she did with most others.
...That had changed a while ago with the Time Compression fiasco.
Somehow during that incident, she'd finally mustered up the courage to approach Zell and tell him that she had a crush on him. In halting words, she'd even asked him out. It was a first step she'd felt was necessary towards becoming more adept at socializing in general.
Zell had been pretty shocked at the time, not that she could blame him: considering how she’d barely been able to talk to him before, hearing that she liked him to begin with probably came out of left field. He was somewhat flustered, but thanked her all the same. The two had parted amicably afterwards--she feeling somewhat better simply for having confessed even if nothing came of it.
...And, truthfully, it seemed oddly easier to talk to him now too. Zell was often trying to coax her into conversation now as he did with his friends--even greeting her in hallways when before they would just pass by one another. She had to admit it was more pleasant, even if it was just his way of trying to be nice.
"Did you finishing reading that?" she motioned to the book in his hand.
Zell glanced down at it absentmindedly, his face flickering in recognition at the book's title, "Oh yeah! It was a pretty neat read. I can't wait to visit Galbadia again to see all of the historical sites they mentioned in it!"
She smiled. It probably surprised people who didn’t know him very well...but the enthusiastic and impulsive Zell was something of a history buff. He usually checked out at least one book on the subject every week. In fact, that was how she'd started to take notice of him in the first place.
The girl reached out to take the book from his hand when her eyes trailed up his arm. She was startled to see a rather long cut on the exposed skin...ranging from his wrist to his elbow. A thin stream of blood was pooling at the wound, fatter droplets threatening to trickle down at any second from the thin, needle-like cut.
"You’re hurt!" she pointed at it, wondering how he hadn't noticed something so visible on his own person already.
The martial artist blinked in surprise at her outburst and glanced down, "Oh...I thought I felt a sting earlier!" his cheeks reddened in embarrassment and he let out a nervous little laugh, "I was training. I guess I got nicked!"
She pointed to a nearby table and an empty seat, "Sit down."
He frowned, "Besides feeling pretty dumb, I'm fine...really! I don't need..."
"Sit."
Grabbing his other arm firmly, she guided him to the table and gently pushed him into the chair. Looking rather surprised at her actions, the young man complied.
There was a stock of potions behind the staff desk: after certain...events that took place recently at the Garden, it was decided upon as a cautionary measure. She retrieved one and came back, using a small amount of the bottle to cover the cut. The skin began to heal over in a matter of seconds as if there had never been an issue there to begin with.
"...It's better to treat even minor injuries like that when you first notice them. In order to avoid worse problems down the road." She was surprised by how steady and level her voice sounded as she talked, tentatively touching the repaired skin of his arm to make sure she hadn't missed a spot, "I--I read that in a medical textbook once."
"..." Zell was uncharacteristically quiet, and she pulled her hand back quickly--afraid she’d overstepped some kind of boundary.
"S--sorry. I'll get that book checked back in for you and..." her voice was trailing off as she hurriedly got up from the chair she was sitting on beside him, wanting nothing more than to flee from that very spot.
"Hey!"
Zell's voice stopped her though. Nervously, she snuck a peek at him over her shoulder. His expression was surprisingly serious and very determined-looking, but the red tinge that had been forming on his cheeks earlier was pretty much covering his entire face now.
"My mom wants me to stop by the house the next time we're by Balamb. For a home-cooked meal or something." He was talking fast and low, the girl having to strain her ears to make out his mumbled words, "She always makes a ton of food--even more than I can eat, and you've seen me at the cafeteria, I can eat a ton...if you wouldn’t mind--youwanttocomewithme?"
She blinked stupidly for a few seconds, trying to process the garbled last part.
The martial artist looked very much like a tomato right now. He gestured helplessly with his hands for a couple of moments, finely managing to get out a lame "Free food?" question in his utter embarrassment.
Her own face grew hot at the realization of what he was trying to ask (and pantomime to) her. The two of them probably looked ridiculous standing there: both blushing like mad.
"That...sounds nice." She finally managed to squeak out, her heart pounding incredibly fast once more.
Zell looked relieved, his normal grin spreading across his still rather red cheeks. She couldn't help but return the smile.
...Who knew? Maybe she'd try wearing her hair down the next time they were in Balamb too.
