Title: Going Anywhere
Notes: A fic written for the Fic Prompt Party over at [livejournal.com profile] ff_minigames. The prompt was "Zack/Aeris(/Cloud, if you want) - I don't care what's happening, as long as it's sweet and there's no angst or dying. Crisis Core-era, AU, whatever." by [livejournal.com profile] virago_queen what we got is a a mess that shows I shouldn't be writing fic for games I haven't really played after midnight. XD;
Summary: They took a midnight train going anywhere~ Zack and Aerith meet on a train, spend time together in some random unnamed city, and then separate as Zack goes back to tack care of unfinished business. The summary's probably way more coherent than the actual drabble. Oops?
Characters/Pairings: Zack/Aeris

"Just a small town girl living in a lonely world, she took the midnight train going anywhere."

In a small city in the middle of nowhere there lived a young woman who loved flowers. Somehow, despite the drought this particular girl could coax even the most finicky of flowers to bloom on land that most had long assumed was good for nothing. Her home became a spot of bright color in the middle of the drab browns that filled the area all around. At first this cheered people up greatly, it was a think of beauty in a world that was otherwise ugly and harsh. Over time people came to abuse the girl and her flowers. Peopled picked them for their dates and parties, tried to force her to grow crops, and any number of other things. Still this young woman was a caring young woman and she did everything she could to help anyone who needed it.

Then the long drought ended and the plants began to flourish once more. Her services were apparently no longer needed. Still she didn't mind, because this meant that it was better for the town as a whole. Still, it was quite a surprise to discover that the town folk hadn't actually abandoned her. Instead they banded together and bought her a train ticket to another town. Sure their town was flourishing now, but there were other towns that could use the love and special magic that only she could provide. So they sent her on, bidding her to help some other people the way she'd helped them.

Surprised, she agreed. After all, she had no real family to speak of and no reason to stay. Somehow in all the years she'd lived in this town she'd never made even one friend. So for this reason, she jumped eagerly at the chance to move and discover more of what the world had to offer. Unsure of where to go, she booked her ticket to anywhere.

"Just a city boy, born and raised in south Detroit, he took the midnight train going anywhere."

In a big city full of thousands and thousands of people it was easy for a young man to fall between the cracks. His academic scores were only average and while he enjoyed playing sports he wasn't good enough to go professional either. In such a big city, there was no curse more damning than that of mediocrity. At first he'd rebelled, getting into trouble and picking fights with people with reckless abandon. He'd claimed not to care what happened to himself. Then one day he'd been rescued from a near death situation by a strong young man from a strange organization called SOLDIER. From that day on he knew just what it was that he wanted to do.

The road to becoming a SOLDIER wasn't an easy one, but he'd managed. Along the way he learned to really open up with other people, to let loose the charming young man he'd been before he'd turned rebel. It soon turned out that while it wasn't a perfect fit, he was good at being a SOLDIER. For the most part he enjoyed his job too, which was always a bonus. The higher he ranked, the more he began to realize that there was something wrong with the organization that he worked for, and that something wasn't right about what they were doing. Finally one day an order came that he just couldn't accept, instead of blindly following orders he decided to get away for a while until he could figure out just what it was he needed to do.

So what did he do? He took the midnight train going anywhere.

Two young people, destination unknown. What were the odds that they would meet? A young woman running towards an unknown future and a young man running from an uncertain present, what could they have in common? Enough it seemed.

Their first meeting was an awkard one, he literally fell on her as he was looking for a seat. The train lurched just right and he ended up sitting in her lap. One might even say it was love at first sight.

Sitting down in the seat next to her's, he couldn't help the dopey grin that crossed his face every time that he looked at her. She was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. There was nothing in Detroit that could compare not even the fanciest debutant could have compared to the light in her eyes and the charm in her smile. He was lost. She couldn't complain, falling for his spiky black hair and beautiful eyes from the first moment he'd literally fallen into her life. His slightly crooked smile and the way she felt relaxed, even safe around him made her certain that this was the one.

To say that their rapport was strong belittled the feeling somewhat. It wasn't long before she felt like she'd known him all of her life. So, somehow, it was just natural to just get off at a random station together somewhere along the way. Sometimes it takes a stranger's smile for people to open up and be the people they were really deep down inside.

What city they were in neither youth could say, but then they didn't care so long as they got to spend time together. They spent forever walking together arm in arm at a park just enjoying each other's company. Eventually he splurged and bought her a ribbon for her hair. It was fun, it was romantic, and it was perfectly innocent. She couldn't have asked for a better day.

As the day wore on, he came to realize that he couldn't run away from the problems at his job. He just had to stand up and face them head on. SOLDIER didn't much like just letting their members go after all and he didn't want to get her into trouble. So reluctantly, they made to part ways. As he boarded the train, she dared to steal one kiss to remember the time they'd spent together. As the train finally started to leave the station she couldn't help but run after it, panic showing clearly on her face. For all the time they'd spent together there was one thing that had gone unsaid.

"My name is Aerith!" She yelled, feet pounding as she tried to keep up. He looked up and smiled, the corner of his eyes crinkling slightly as he did so. "Zack!" He scribbled something onto a piece of paper and then it go. Catching it wasn't easy, but she'd managed. On it was his address as well as his full name. Clutching the paper to her chest closely, she smiled and stopped running. Still she yelled after him one last thing. "I'll write you letters! When you're ready just come back here. You'll find me waiting I promise!" Then the train pulled on out of view and continued on its way taking him out of sight and temporarily out of her life. Not that she cared, because she knew deep down that one day soon he'd be back.

But for now Aerith would just be sure to write him lots and lots of letters.
